Egyptian Beds – Inclined Bed Therapy

The Egyptian Beds were inclined from Foot to Head by 5°, though there is no conclusive evidence that this was done for any other reason but aesthetics or comfort, we are just now realizing the health benefits to be gained from IBT (Inclined Bed Therapy).

First of all I would like to note that the Egyptians understood Pythagorean Math before Pythagoras existed as did the Celts or least the Pre-Celts and even the Greeks given the accomplishments of their times. Now onto the subject at hand.

Construction / Engineering:

The Bed of the Egyptians was at a 5 degree incline from foot to head. Modern research seems to find that there are several health benefits to this design of which I will describe later in this blog. I would first like to show that the Egyptians had a fundamental understanding of Pythagoras’ Right Triangle, for without it the incline could not be consistently 5 degrees.

If you take a modern queen size bed at 80 inches in length, the incline is at 5 degrees and the height of incline is just under 7 inches. this can be found using Pythagoras’ Theorem; 80*sin(5)=6.9724, and the distance from foot to head at ground level would be just under 79 and 3/4 inches or; 80*cos(5)= 79.6955. I will be constructing a frame for my existing Queen size bed to evaluate the health benefits first hand.

Health Benefits:

*Note* Everything I have seen suggests to start at a 2 to 3 inch incline first before proceeding to the full 5° *Note*

  • Nightly dreams become lucid (may be a product of lower toxins in the body and elevated oxygen levels).

  • Oedema problems resolved.
  • The most common report is that sleeping on an incline feels more natural than sleeping flat. People after sleeping inclined for a few months are never happy going back to sleeping horizontal. This is very addictive, you’ll actually enjoy going to bed.

    Inclined To Sleep Inclined Yet?

    What is Inclined Bed Therapy?

    People with varicose veins, oedema (fluid retention) are needed to participate in an online Diary Study, in order to prove that simply altering our sleeping position can have a positive affect on these problems.
    If you or someone you know has Varicose Veins, the standard advise is to raise your legs and tilt your bed the other way to IBT, Or to undergo risky and expensive surgery that is prone to fail because it does not address why the pressure inside the vein causes it to bulge.
    Which according to current physiology books makes sense. But what if that logic is incorrect? All the evidence from our study is showing that gravity is not a force we are struggling to overcome but a force that drives the fluids within the body.

    My wife’s calf showing clearly her varicose vein shadow, which went flat after 4 weeks of Inclined Bed Therapy back in 1994 and has not returned to its former state since.
    Alun has already confirmed my statement on the study thread that Varicose veins will shrink after 4 weeks of IBT and has supplied us with photographic before and after 4 weeks of IBT along with a diary account of his observations. And he is not alone.

    So far our study is running towards a predicted outcome that flies in the face of current physiology literature.

    Sandra says IBT has been a life changing experience after 46 years of walking in pain after she was hit by a motorcycle age 13. A year ago she began using Inclined Bed Therapy. She forgot to mention she had problems with her hip, walked bent over, and recovered from a prolapsed bladder without surgery.
